CASEL celebrated <a href=\"https:\/\/casel.org\/blog\/30-years-in-sel-is-more-essential-than-ever-and-the-field-is-ready-to-meet-the-moment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">30 years since we first established the field,<\/a>&nbsp;and together we\u2019ve seen advances in research and implementation, record-breaking numbers of schools prioritizing this work, and a stronger, growing community of parents, educators, leaders, and young people making SEL a critical part of their lives. As we look ahead to 2025, let\u2019s take a moment to commemorate the big findings, key questions, and top themes of SEL in 2024!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-interconnectedness-of-sel-and-academic-instruction-took-center-stage\"><strong>The Interconnectedness of SEL and Academic Instruction Took Center Stage<\/strong><\/h2><a class=top href=\"#top\">Back to top<\/a>\n\n\n\n<p>Nationally and globally, we saw ongoing urgency around student achievement and engagement, as young people made strides in <a href=\"https:\/\/educationrecoveryscorecard.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/ERS-Report-Final-1.31.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">academic recovery<\/a> and educators worked to address high rates of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forward-ed.com\/post\/where-have-our-children-gone-chronic-absenteeism-and-the-disappearance-of-black-latinx-and-econom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">absenteeism<\/a>. SEL was a leading evidence-based strategy that schools leveraged to address these priorities. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rand.org\/pubs\/research_reports\/RRA956-23.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spring 2024 survey <\/a>of school district leaders, SEL was the most frequently cited strategy to help students recover academically from COVID-19 setbacks. Increasingly, schools and districts are also embedding SEL into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbez.org\/education\/2024\/09\/16\/cps-looks-to-improve-neighborhood-schools-backs-off-changes-at-selective-enrollments-and-charters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">strategic plans<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.k12dive.com\/news\/new-york-graduation-exam-portrait-of-graduate-2027\/732799\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">graduate profiles<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/casel.org\/blog\/building-stempathy-engineering-inclusive-classrooms-through-project-based-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">academic content<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To help deepen these strategies, CASEL spent this year focused on the connections between SEL and academics. Our 2024 <a href=\"https:\/\/selexchange.casel.org\/about\/2024-highlights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>SEL Exchange<\/em><\/a>, <strong>\u201cACCELERATE: Academic Thriving and Lifelong Learning,\u201d<\/strong> examined key questions: How does SEL underpin students\u2019 capacity to learn? How can SEL support instruction in academic fields? How can academic instruction provide opportunities for promoting the social and emotional skills students need?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a <strong>national call to action around the <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/edtrust.org\/blog\/the-literacy-crisis-in-the-u-s-is-deeply-concerning-and-totally-preventable\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>literacy crisis<\/strong><\/a>, we partnered with leading researchers across the fields of neuroscience, human development, and learning sciences to begin a deep exploration of <a href=\"https:\/\/casel.org\/role-of-sel-in-improving-literacy-development-introductory-brief\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the role of SEL in improving literacy development<\/a>. Together, we synthesized the large body of research across multiple fields and put forth <a href=\"https:\/\/casel.org\/student-literacy_white-paper\/?view=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">federal policy recommendations<\/a> for supporting an evidence-based approach to literacy instruction, curricula, and teacher preparation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We also <a href=\"https:\/\/casel.org\/events\/igniting-lifelong-learning-sel-academic-integration-three-part-series\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">welcomed experts<\/a> to explore <a href=\"https:\/\/casel.org\/blog\/what-does-the-research-say-about-sel-academic-integration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">what the research says <\/a>&nbsp;about SEL and academic integration, strategies for <a href=\"https:\/\/casel.org\/blog\/what-strategies-can-we-use-to-integrate-sel-and-academic-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">integrating SEL and academic learning<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/casel.org\/blog\/what-policies-and-conditions-support-sel-and-academic-integration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">policies and conditions <\/a>that support this work. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development\u2019s Survey on Social and Emotional Skills also revealed disparities within and between countries in how we support social and emotional skills, and where we need to focus more of our efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"624\" height=\"624\" src=\"https:\/\/casel.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com\/fhfahnyy-Picture3.png?auto=compress&amp;fit=scale&amp;fm=png&amp;h=1900&amp;w=1900\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-80552\" srcset=\"https:\/\/casel.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com\/sites\/1\/.\/fhfahnyy-Picture3.png 640w, https:\/\/casel.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com\/sites\/1\/.\/fhfahnyy-Picture3.png 1900w, https:\/\/casel.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com\/sites\/1\/.\/fhfahnyy-Picture3.png 300w, https:\/\/casel.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com\/sites\/1\/.\/fhfahnyy-Picture3.png 1536w, https:\/\/casel.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com\/sites\/1\/.\/fhfahnyy-Picture3.png 2048w, https:\/\/casel.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com\/sites\/1\/.\/fhfahnyy-Picture3.png 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>To better understand <em>how<\/em> SEL can support student outcomes, Yale researchers shared a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2773233924000044\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new framework <\/a>of five ways of teaching SEL, including modeling, providing opportunities for practicing and applying SEL to new contexts, helping students elaborate on SEL concepts, and validating emotions and perspectives. New research also added to our understanding of how social-emotional growth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyu.edu\/about\/news-publications\/news\/2024\/march\/social-emotional-growth-linked-to-higher-math-and-english-scores.html\">predicts academic s<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyu.edu\/about\/news-publications\/news\/2024\/march\/social-emotional-growth-linked-to-higher-math-and-english-scores.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">u<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyu.edu\/about\/news-publications\/news\/2024\/march\/social-emotional-growth-linked-to-higher-math-and-english-scores.html\">ccess,<\/a><strong> <\/strong>undergirds <a href=\"https:\/\/tntp.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/The-Opportunity-Makers-TNTP.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">effective schools<\/a>, and can better support students across all <a href=\"https:\/\/casel.org\/blog\/sel-journal-recap-3-ways-to-enhance-sel-outcomes-for-all-students\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">backgrounds and learning needs<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At&nbsp; CASEL, we had the opportunity to celebrate the past three decades of SEL by inviting major researchers to look back at the field\u2019s achievements and<a href=\"https:\/\/casel.org\/blog\/30-years-of-sel-research-whats-new-and-whats-next\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> what\u2019s new and next in the research<\/a>. As we look forward, we are continuing to cultivate the next generation of SEL research through our <a href=\"https:\/\/casel.org\/about-us\/our-mission-work\/casel-weissberg-scholars\/\">Weissberg Scholars and the <\/a>editorially-independent <strong><em>Social and Emotional Learning: Research, Practice, and Policy Journal<\/em><\/strong>, a field-wide, peer-reviewed journal which continues to <a href=\"https:\/\/casel.org\/blog\/5-must-read-articles-from-the-sel-journal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">deepen our knowledge<\/a> about SEL around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Read more: <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/journal\/social-and-emotional-learning-research-practice-and-policy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Social and Emotional Learning: Research, Practice, and Policy<\/em><\/a><br><em>Hear more: <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/CASELorg\/videos\/425618679847869\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Dr. Christina Cipriano on seven new studies from The Education Collaboratory at Yale University<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"despite-challenges-sel-implementation-hit-record-highs\"><strong>Despite Challenges, SEL Implementation Hit Record Highs<\/strong><\/h2><a class=top href=\"#top\">Back to top<\/a>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the end of funding provided through the<a href=\"https:\/\/casel.org\/blog\/continuing-the-support-for-students-academic-social-and-emotional-thriving-after-the-american-rescue-plan-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> American Rescue Plan (ARP)<\/a> and ongoing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edweek.org\/leadership\/whats-really-holding-schools-back-from-implementing-sel\/2024\/04\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">implementation challenges<\/a>, states and districts continued to prioritize SEL as an essential part of student learning and development. An analysis of findings from CASEL\u2019s Nationwide Policy Scan and the American Teacher Panel and American School Leader Panel Surveys showed that more U.S. schools are <a href=\"https:\/\/casel.org\/links\/social-and-emotional-learning-in-u-s-schools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">incorporating SEL into students\u2019 educational experiences<\/a>, and nearly all U.S. states have policies that support SEL in schools. 83 percent of schools now report implementing an SEL curriculum\u2014a record high rate of adoption that has steadily increased from 46 percent in the 2017-2018 school year. Schools are also incorporating SEL through academic integration, check-ins, and other strategies, and demonstrating that these investments have had a positive impact on teachers and student learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This growing demand has been met by a surge in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edutopia.org\/article\/choosing-sel-program-asking-right-questions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">evidence-based SEL program offerings<\/a>. CASEL\u2019s&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/pg.casel.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Program Guide<\/a> now features 99 programs, following this year\u2019s rigorous review cycle that saw an 11 percent increase in program applicants focused on integrating SEL into core academic areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What does all this growing implementation look like in classrooms and schools across the nation? Earlier in the year, we saw SEL champions rally behind the second-ever <a href=\"https:\/\/leadingwithsel.org\/selweek\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>National SEL Week<\/strong>,<\/a> (March 4-8), culminating in International<a href=\"http:\/\/selday.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> SEL Day<\/a>. With our partners in the <a href=\"https:\/\/leadingwithsel.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Leading with SEL Coalition<\/strong><\/a>\u2014comprised of 37 national organizations representing parents, educators, school and district leaders, and more\u2014we visited Capitol Hill to build support for SEL. The White House issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/casel.org\/u-s-senate-and-white-house-honor-national-social-and-emotional-learning-sel-week-with-bipartisan-resolution-presidential-letter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">letter <\/a>recognizing National SEL Week, and a bipartisan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/senate-resolution\/576\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Senate Resolution on National SEL Week<\/a> was introduced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Washington dignitaries were joined by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=1853644611748929\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">7-year-old Cordelia DuBois<\/a><strong> <\/strong>from New Hampshire, CASEL\u2019s student ambassador who recently became our youngest-ever <a href=\"https:\/\/casel.org\/casel-announces-2024-social-and-emotional-learning-leaders-of-the-year-selly-awards-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SEL Leaders of the Year<\/a> (SELLY) awardee. Cordelia demonstrated to a packed room of policymakers and stakeholders just what SEL means to her and how it helps her both in the classroom and at home. Through our first-ever <a href=\"https:\/\/casel.org\/blog\/sel-week-blog-contest-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CASEL Blog Contest<\/a>, we got to hear from more educators, teachers, parents, and students from around the world about their experiences with SEL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout the year, our CASEL communities of practice brought together 475 school districts and communities across the U.S. through the launch of our <a href=\"https:\/\/casel.org\/casel-announces-fourth-cohort-of-sel-fellows-to-support-students-nationwide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fourth cohort of SEL Fellows, <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/casel.org\/about-us\/our-mission-work\/community-network-partners\/#community-network-partners-who-are-we\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Community Network Partners<\/a>, and collaborations with <a href=\"https:\/\/schoolguide.casel.org\/resource\/sel-discussion-series-for-parents-and-caregivers-english\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">caregivers<\/a>. Already, many districts and states are leveraging their <a href=\"https:\/\/casel.org\/portraits-of-a-graduate-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">portraits of a graduate<\/a> to offer a holistic look at the skills and competencies needed to thrive in work, postsecondary educational opportunities, community, and their personal lives. In the coming years, SEL will likely play an increasingly important role in defining a future-ready graduate, and CASEL will be focused throughout 2025 on effective strategies for preparing young people for tomorrow\u2019s world. (<a href=\"http:\/\/selexchange.casel.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sign up<\/a> to be notified about our 2025 <em>SEL Exchange<\/em>, which will focus on future readiness.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As we look to the future, we are seeing an increasingly global and connected SEL field that thrives on bringing communities together to learn from one another and share progress. The 2024 <em>Exchange<\/em> (noted above) brought together insights from SEL work in Colombia, China, Argentina, and Mexico, among others! (See our<a href=\"https:\/\/casel.org\/blog\/highlights-and-insights-from-the-2024-sel-exchange\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> recap of the conference<\/a> for more details on these international sessions.) <em>The SEL Journal<\/em> similarly showcased work in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2773233924000123\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">China<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2773233924000159\/pdfft?md5=ee0f73dc1cae7703d419bd8d757a7b5e&amp;pid=1-s2.0-S2773233924000159-main.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Uganda<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2773233924000056\/pdfft?md5=8e892f31f65d033d5960d23dd205bc1c&amp;pid=1-s2.0-S2773233924000056-main.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Colombia<\/a>. At CASEL, we supported this work by collaborating with ICMEC to create an update to the <a href=\"https:\/\/schoolguide.casel.org\/resource\/social-emotional-learning-and-child-self-protection-standards-and-benchmarks-for-international-schools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SEL and Child Self-Protection Standards and Benchmarks for International Schools<\/a>, sponsored by The Office of Overseas Schools of the U.S. Department of State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As we look to 2025, we\u2019re preparing to launch our inaugural cohort of International SEL Fellows, welcoming leaders from across the globe into a collaborative network dedicated to advancing SEL in diverse communities.
